CP invests in aquafeed production in India

Thailand’s CP Group plans to invest around THB 1.5 billion (USD 49.8 million)in three factories in India that produce fish feed. The company said that its sales in India are expected to increase at least 20% in 2011 from THB 15.2 billion (USD 505.6 million) projected in 2010.

PDC divests underperforming aquaculture business

The government owned Penang Development Corporation (PDC) in Malaysia has sold its 60% stake in PDC Aquaculture to joint-venture partner GST Seafood Suppliers. The loss-making venture was divested for  USD 414.000, realising a USD 84,400  profit for the state government that invested MYR 1.035 million (USD 329,600) in the business. This is part of PDC’s new strategy of Competency, Accountability and Transparency management to maximise its use of assets, said Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

South Korea maintain age limit on US beef imports

South Korea will not take discussion on age limits on US beef imports any further said South Korean Trade Minister Kim Jong Hoon. The country currently restricts imports to beef from cows younger than 30 months. The U.S. and South Korea agreed to certain changes in the pending free trade agreement last week which did not include any changes in its beef import restrictions.

Thailand’s Surapon Foods adds new processing plant

Thailand’s Surapon Foods Public Co Ltd has invested THB 500 million (USD 16.63 million) in setting up a new food processing plant to produce chicken products mostly for export to Japan and Europe. The new plant, owned by Surapon Nichirei Foods, a joint venture between Surapon Foods and Japan’s Nichirei Foods Co Ltd, is the company’s second facility. It has a production capacity of 5,000 tonnes/year and is now ready for processing foods for exports. Surapon Foods currently operates four processing plants, including this newest one, with a total production capacity of 20,000 tonnes/year. The company expects sales to total THB 5 billion (USD 166.33 million) in 2010 and to grow to THB 5.5 billion (USD 182.97) in 2011.

Sukmono Vietnam builds new food processing plant

Sukmono Vietnam, a subsidiary of Netherlands-based ready meals producer PadifoodGroup, has  started construction of the Jimmy Hung Anh factory in Vietnam’s southern province of Binh Duong. Located on Bau Bang Industrial Zone, the factory costs USD 5 million and is designed to have an initial capacity of 8000 tonne/year. The capacity will be increased to 60,000 tonne/year after two years of the operations. The plant will produce instant foods such as noodles, vermicelli, instant gruel and other rice-originated nutritional food products. These products will be exported to European markets with a targeted export value of USD 20 million/year.

Thai chicken exports appear encouraging in 2011

Thailand’s chicken exports are seen to be encouraging in 2011, with export value forecast to be between USD 1.65 billion and USD 1.73 billion compared with USD 1.57 billion estimated for this year, said Anan Sirimongkolkasem, President of the Thai Broiler Processing Exporters Association. Despite the appreciation of Thai baht and the uncertain global economic outlook, demand for Thai chicken remains strong. For this year, Thailand is expected to export 410,000-420,000 tonnes of chicken, 360,000 tonnes of which would be cooked products and the remainder frozen raw chicken. Raw chicken exports were better than earlier expected this year and will grow further next year, Mr Anan said.

VIV Asia 2011 will see more exhibitors

VIV Asia 2011, scheduled to run from March 9-11 2011, will feature 650 exhibitors, an increase of 100 exhibitors from 2009. It will occupy an extra hall giving it a floor space of 15,000 square metre. Project manager Ruwan Berculo predicts that the show will have more visitors from Indonesia and Vietnam and a good number from India next year.

Vietnam’s agricultural exports jumps 21%

Exports of agricultural, forestry and seafood products from Vietnam during January-November 2010 increased 20.8% year-on-year to USD 13.4 billion. The rubber exports grew 93%, followed by cashew nuts 32.5%, pepper 23%, seafood 16.3%, and rice 51.4%. The country’s turnover from seafood exports is expected to hit a record USD 4.7-4.8 billion in the year. Boosting the exports was the recovery of the global economy, especially in traditional export markets of Vietnam.

New FMD outbreak in South Korea

A new foot-and-mouth outbreak has surfaced at two hog farms in North Gyeongsang, South Korea only two months after Korea was declared free of the disease. The two farms house 9,000 pigs. Movement of people and livestock in the area has been restricted by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. About 23,000 animals will be picked out to prevent the disease from spreading. Farms within a 20-kilometer radius of the outbreak site will be banned from selling or removing livestock from the area.

PRRS outbreaks in Thai provinces under control

The PRRS outbreaks reported last week in several provinces in Thailand including Phitsanulok, Ubon Ratchathani, Loei, Nong Khai and Nakhon Srithammarat  has been contained and losses limited to only a few thousands pigs, said Preecha Somboonprasert, Director-General of the Department of Livestock Development (DLD). The outbreaks resulted from farmers who brought in to their farms pigs from sub-standard sources, Mr Preecha said. Transportation of swine from or within the infected areas, especially the bordering provinces to must be approved by DLD to prevent new outbreaks.
